Nonprofit Partnership Erases Millions in Massachusetts Medical Debt

Nearly 70,000 Massachusetts residents are receiving over $38 million in direct medical debt relief this week through a collaboration among multiple nonprofits, The Boston Globe reported. The initiative targets low- and moderate-income earners in Eastern Massachusetts, wiping out outstanding balances ranging from $5 to $86,000. This latest wave of cancellations brings the total amount erased by the partnership since its 2024 launch to more than $293 million, according to the groups involved.

Automatic Relief Criteria and Eligibility Thresholds

The debt-slashing program operates entirely automatically without an application process or patient requests. Patients qualify if their medical debt equals 5% or more of their annual income, or if they earn at or below four times the federal poverty level, which amounts to $63,840 a year for an individual and $132,000 for a family of four. Boston.com noted that the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt works alongside hospitals, health systems, and collection agencies to acquire past-due portfolios for pennies on the dollar.

Impact on Financial Health and Care Access

State data reveals that one in eight residents carries medical debt, placing significant strain on financial health and well-being while disproportionately affecting lower-income households and communities of color, according to Boston.com. Dr. Ann Hwang, president of the Atrius Health Equity Foundation, stated that medical debt not only impacts families’ long-term financial futures but also makes people reluctant to seek care.

Letters Arrive for Qualifying Residents

Recipients begin receiving Undue Medical Debt-branded envelopes in the mail this week notifying them of the relief, with no action required on their part to finalize the cancellations. Allison Sesso, head of Undue Medical Debt, stated that eliminating medical debt gives people a meaningful fresh start so that getting necessary care does not come at the cost of economic security and mental health. The relief applies only to the specific debts acknowledged in the letters, with no guarantee against future liabilities.
