Five Workers Missing After Prospector 5 Rig Sinks Off Gabon Coast

Five offshore workers remain missing following the sinking of the Prospector 5 jack-up drilling rig off the coast of Gabon, where emergency responders have rescued 110 personnel. The self-elevating drilling unit went down at approximately 20:37 local time on October 24, 2026, in the Atlantic Ocean near Mayumba in Nyanga Province.

The Bermuda-registered rig, owned by Borr Drilling and contracted by BW Energy Gabon SA for a planned drilling campaign in the Dussafu Marine license area, experienced a stability failure during preparations. Preliminary information indicates that the unit suffered a punch-through event during preload activities, causing the seabed to subside beneath one of its legs and destabilizing the structure.

Rescue Operations and State Mobilization Underway

Out of 115 personnel onboard at the time of the incident, 110 individuals have been safely accounted for and rescued. Borr Drilling activated its onshore emergency response team to coordinate with local authorities and BW Energy, establishing a dedicated contact line for affected families at +44 (0)1224 087026, as reported by Offshore Energy.

Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema is closely monitoring the rescue operation and ordered the immediate mobilization of state resources, including naval forces. Gabon’s Ministry of Oil and Gas confirmed the sinking of the platform and launched an official investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and establish liability.

Bruno Morand, CEO of Borr Drilling, stated in a company release: “We are deeply concerned for those who remain unaccounted for and everyone affected by this incident. Our immediate priority is supporting the ongoing search and rescue efforts and the welfare of all personnel involved.”

Production Shutdown at MaBoMo Facility

BW Energy suspended production at its nearby MaBoMo wellhead platform in accordance with standard safety procedures during ongoing drilling preparations. The company confirmed that there has been no reported damage to the facility or related equipment, and no accidental discharge of harmful substances into the sea.

BW Energy operates three licenses offshore Gabon, which include the Dussafu production license alongside the Niosi and Guduma exploration licenses. Operations across these adjacent fields remain halted as emergency teams concentrate fully on marine search efforts.

Precedents in Jack-Up Rig Stability Failures

The sinking of the Prospector 5 highlights a punch through event during preload activities resulting in loss of stability.

A comparable incident occurred in 2021, when the jack-up drilling rig Naga 7, owned by Malaysia’s Velesto Energy and operating for ConocoPhillips off the Malaysian state of Sarawak, sank after experiencing a seabed punch-through during positioning.

Investigation Timelines and Government Inquiry

Gabonese maritime authorities and the Ministry of Oil and Gas are leading the ongoing inquiry into the structural failure of the Friede & Goldman JU-2000E class rig, which is designed to operate in water depths up to 400 feet and drill down to 35,000 feet. Investigators are analyzing the circumstances of the incident to determine the cause of the preload failure.
