Goaltender Will Cranley stopped 27 shots to lead the Springfield Thunderbirds to a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday night at Bojangles Coliseum, securing a split of their road series. The win brings Springfield’s early-season road record to 3-1-0-0 as the team prepares to return home.
Theo Lindstein and Dylan Peterson Provide Scoring in Tight Road Contest
Springfield opened the scoring at 5:51 of the first period when defenseman Michael Buchinger forced a turnover from a board scrum and fed Theo Lindstein at the point. Lindstein maneuvered toward the center of the ice and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Kirill Gerasimyuk’s glove. After Jack Devine tied the game for Charlotte with 27 seconds remaining in the second period, the Thunderbirds reclaimed the lead in the third. At 6:32, Jack Finley gathered a loose puck near the left boards and delivered a cross-ice pass to Dylan Peterson, who beat Gerasimyuk to make it 2-1. Cranley and the Springfield penalty kill preserved the lead down the stretch, successfully turning away two late Charlotte power plays.
Penalty Trouble Slows Pace in Second Period
The game’s momentum stalled during a heavily penalized second period that featured 28 combined penalty minutes and seven power-play opportunities. Despite the extended special teams time, scoring chances were limited. Charlotte managed only six shots on Cranley in the frame, while Springfield fired four shots at Gerasimyuk. Springfield veteran forward Oskar Sundqvist came closest to extending his team’s lead during the period, striking the crossbar with a high wrist shot.
