Six Days Remain to Claim $500,000 Powerball Prize in South Dakota

Sioux Falls, SD – A South Dakota Lottery player has just six days to claim a $500,000 Powerball prize won in the August 27, 2025, Double Play drawing. The winning ticket was purchased at Hy Vee Gas, located at 5201 W. 26th St. In Sioux Falls.

The deadline to claim the prize is February 23, 2026. The player matched five of five winning numbers in the Double Play drawing, falling just short of the $10 million top prize by missing the Double Play Powerball.

Ticket Details and Claim Process

The Powerball ticket was sold at Hyvee Gas near Marion and 26th Street on the west side of Sioux Falls according to KELOLAND News. Lottery officials advise players to sign the back of their tickets immediately to prove ownership.

The prize can be claimed at the Sioux Falls validation center located at 3605 S. Western Ave. Security measures are in place to verify the legitimacy of the ticket, though specific details of the process are not publicly disclosed.

Financial Implications

South Dakota is one of the few states that does not tax lottery winnings, meaning the winner will only be subject to federal taxes. Withholding on prizes over $5,000 is 24 percent, meaning the winner could receive approximately $380,000 after taxes as reported by Yahoo News.

If the prize remains unclaimed, it will be added to the South Dakota Lottery’s Unclaimed Prize Fund, which supports future game prizes.

Recent South Dakota Lottery Wins

This isn’t the only recent large Powerball prize claimed in South Dakota. On January 27, a $2 million Powerball prize from the August 23, 2025, draw was claimed by a winner who chose to remain anonymous. That winning ticket was purchased at Lucky’s Gas N More in Mobridge.

an Aberdeen resident recently claimed a Lucky for Life top prize, which will pay $1,000 a day for the rest of their life.
