Ukraine Faces Increased mine Danger Due to Flooding

Recent flooding in Ukraine has significantly increased the danger from landmines and unexploded ordnance. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) warns that floodwaters have likely dislodged mines from their original locations and carried them to new areas.
According to the SESU, the areas most at risk are those recently liberated from Russian forces, especially in the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. these areas were heavily mined by Russian troops during the occupation. The flooding has washed away warning signs and made it arduous to detect the mines.
Mines can now be found in fields, forests, gardens, and even residential areas where they weren’t previously present. The SESU emphasizes that people should be extremely cautious and avoid any areas that may have been flooded.
Experts warn that the mines pose a threat not only to people but also to animals. They urge residents to report any suspicious objects to the authorities and not to attempt to move or handle them themselves.
De-mining efforts are ongoing, but the scale of the contamination and the ongoing flooding are making the process extremely challenging. International assistance is crucial to help Ukraine clear the mines and ensure the safety of its citizens. you can learn more about mine action in Ukraine from the UN Mine Action Service.
The SESU provides the following safety advice:
- Do not touch any suspicious objects.
- Report any sightings to the police or emergency services.
- Stay on marked roads and paths.
- Be especially careful in areas that have been flooded.
