In 2015,a group of medical experts told parents they should give their infants peanuts starting as young as four months. Now, 10 years later, that advice appears to have led to a dramatic decline in the number of babies who have developed peanut allergies. Dr. David Hill, co-author of the study, joins CBS News to break down the findings.

Decline in Peanut Allergies Linked to Early Infant Exposure, Study Finds

A new study reveals a significant decline in peanut allergies among children, ten years after experts began recommending early introduction of peanuts to infants. The 2015 guidelines advised parents to introduce peanuts to their babies as early as four months of age, and the findings suggest this advice has had a significant positive impact.

Dr. David Hill, a co-author of the study, discussed the findings with CBS News, explaining the dramatic decrease in the number of babies developing peanut allergies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTS-6CWcP5g

This shift in guidance stemmed from research indicating that early exposure to peanuts could actually prevent the development of allergies, rather than trigger them. Prior to 2015, many parents were advised to delay introducing peanuts to their children, a practice now understood to have potentially increased allergy rates.

The study’s findings offer encouraging news for parents and highlight the importance of following evidence-based recommendations regarding infant feeding.
