He intends to leverage the knowledge and experience gained during his time abroad to further enhance the performance of Malaysian doubles players.
Kim Wai,49,recently completed his coaching role in Guangxi,China, and believes malaysian players possess a superior level of skill compared to their Chinese counterparts. However,he also noted the emphasis on speed and power in the Chinese training regimen.
Malaysian Skill vs. Chinese Power
“In terms of skill, we are more skillful than Chinese players. Players in China use more speed and power in their game,” Kim Wai stated on his first day back at BAM. https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/badminton/2023/10/26/kim-wai-back-to-help-raise-standard-of-doubles-players
Interestingly, Kim Wai revealed that he was initially brought to China to share Malaysian coaching methodologies.”They brought me there to learn the techniques I learned under rexy Mainaky and Ong Ewe Hock,” he explained, highlighting the respected reputation of Malaysian badminton coaching. Rexy Mainaky and Ong Ewe Hock are both highly regarded figures in Malaysian badminton history, known for their success in developing world-class doubles players.
Integration with the National Team
Kim Wai will be working alongside head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. He acknowledges the need for a period of adjustment to understand the current players and their individual styles.
“I still don’t know the players’ style and their character, so I need time to understand them,” Kim Wai said. “I can’t just come straight in and correct them without knowing their styles.”
Currently, malaysia boasts three strong men’s doubles pairs ranked within the world’s top five:
