Protesters Disrupt Cop30 Climate Talks in Belém
Tensions flared at teh Cop30 climate talks late Tuesday night when a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous protesters stormed the conference center in Belém.
Several dozen individuals, some adorned in vibrant feather headdresses, breached the entrance, pushing at least one door off its hinges. They proceeded through metal detectors and entered the Blue Zone.
UN security guards intervened, resulting in a physical altercation involving grabbing, shoving, and shouting. At least one non-Indigenous protester carried a banner declaring,”Our forests are not for sale.” others wore T-shirts emblazoned with “Juntos” (Together).
The protesters waved banners and chanted before security personnel forcibly removed them.A UN climate spokesperson reported that two security guards sustained minor injuries,and the venue experienced minor damage.
Following the confrontation, the protesters departed, and uniformed fire brigade officers established a cordon to secure the entrance.
