Music icon Joni Mitchell returned to the stage in Los Angeles last weekend for her first headline concert in 24 years, making a powerful statement about the upcoming US election. Performing at the Hollywood Bowl, Mitchell engaged with the audience, expressed her political views, and showcased both classic and newer songs.

“Fuck Donald Trump!”

During the show, an audience member yelled an insult towards Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. In response, the 80-year-old singer-songwriter declared, “Fuck Donald Trump!” She then continued, “I love that song,” seemingly referencing the 2016 YG song “FDT.” This moment underscored Mitchell’s stance on the political climate.

Calling for Voter Participation

Mitchell, a Canadian citizen, emphasized the importance of voting in the upcoming election. “Everybody get out and vote,” she urged the audience. “This is an important one. I wish I could vote – I’m Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants.”

Political Themes in Her Music

The concert featured the performance of “Dog Eat Dog,” the title track from Mitchell’s 1985 album. This politically charged song, performed for the first time since its release, speaks out against “snakebite evangelists and racketeers” and “big wig financiers.” Mitchell even ad-libbed “like Donald Trump” after the latter line, further highlighting her critique.

Star-Studded Performances

The “Joni Jam” spanned two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and saw Mitchell collaborate with a host of notable musicians, including Brandi Carlile, Wendy & Lisa, Allison Russell, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Marcus Mumford, Annie Lennox, Jacob Collier, and Jon Batiste. The concerts also included the live debut of newer songs like “If I Had a Heart” and “The Sire of Sorrow.”

A Triumphant Return

These concerts come two years after Mitchell’s surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport folk festival, marking her return to live performance after a significant health challenge. In 2015, she suffered a brain aneurysm that left her unable to speak or walk. While she remained seated throughout the performance, singing modified lyrics to Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” (“I’m still sitting after all this time”), her voice and presence shone through.
