Iron Maiden’s First Vocalist, Paul Di’Anno, Dies at 66

Paul Di’Anno, the original frontman of iconic British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has sadly passed away at the age of 66. His record label, Conquest Music, announced the news on Monday, July 24, 2023, on his official Facebook page.

A Rock Legacy Remembered

Di’Anno, born Paul Andrews in Chingford, East London, joined Iron Maiden in 1978, shortly after the band’s formation by bassist Steve Harris. He fronted the band during their formative years, lending his powerful vocals to their early albums, including the seminal “Iron Maiden” and “Killers.”

Conquest Music’s poignant tribute on Facebook read:

“Despite being troubled by severe health issues in recent years that restricted him to performing in a wheelchair, Paul continued to entertain his fans around the world, racking up well over 100 shows since 2023. Conquest Music are proud to have had Paul Di’Anno in our artist family and ask his legion of fans to raise a glass in his memory.”

In a separate statement, Iron Maiden’s official Instagram account expressed their profound sadness and deepest sympathies, acknowledging Di’Anno’s immense contribution to the band’s early success:

“Paul’s contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been travelling as a band for almost five decades. His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world.”

Beyond Iron Maiden: A Musical Journey

Following his departure from Iron Maiden, Di’Anno continued to pursue his musical passions, leading various bands including Gogmagog, Battlezone, Praying Mantis and Killers. His later work was collected and celebrated in the retrospective album The Book of the Beast, released earlier this year.

A Life Marked by Challenges

Di’Anno’s life wasn’t without its difficulties. Later in life, he faced legal issues, including arrests for assault and benefit fraud. He spent nine months in prison in 2011 for fraudulently claiming benefits while simultaneously working and touring.

In recent years, Di’Anno battled a series of health problems, including sepsis and an MRSA infection after hospital treatment. Fans rallied to support his recovery with a crowdfunding effort for a much-needed double knee replacement surgery.

Remembering a Legend

Paul Di’Anno’s powerful voice and stage presence left an indelible mark on heavy metal music. While his life was marked by both triumphs and struggles, his legacy as a pioneer and innovator in the genre will endure.
