Today, December 4, believers celebrate Memorial Day of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara.Saint Barbara was born in the 1st-2nd century in the city of Iliopolis (modern Türkiye or Syria, depending on the sources) into the wealthy family of the pagan Dioscoria. It is known that from childhood she was a very gorgeous and intelligent girl. Her father sought to protect her from the influence of Christianity and locked her in a high tower.

Though, Varvara accepted the Christian faith and, contrary to the will of her father, did not renounce Christ. She was baptized and maintained her chastity and faith, even under the threat of death.

When her father discovered her faith, he first severely punished his daughter and then personally executed her with a sword. According to legend, after the execution, Dioscorios was instantly punished with lightning, which symbolizes the justice of God. This episode secured for Varvara the image of a protector from thunder and lightning.
