Dublin-Belfast Train Service to Run Hourly for the First Time in Decades

In a major boost for cross-border travel, the Dublin to Belfast train service is expanding to an hourly schedule starting Tuesday. This marks the most significant service increase on the route in over 25 years.

The enhanced service will see eight trains running each way on Sundays, up from six. This increased frequency is the result of a €25 million (£20 million) investment from the Irish Government, aimed at improving sustainable transport connectivity between the two largest cities on the island.

Transforming Rail Travel

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan hailed the new hourly service as the “start of our all-island rail transformation.” He emphasized the collaborative effort between Iarnród Éireann and Translink in achieving this goal.

“The new hourly frequency represents a doubling of the service and significantly enhances sustainable transport connectivity between the two largest cities on the island. This will help people along the line to choose the train more often, and will strengthen both economic and social connections right along the corridor.”

Northern Ireland’s Minister for Infrastructure, John O’Dowd, echoed the sentiment, stating that the expanded rail network will drive jobs and growth, stimulate development, and improve access to services and education. He also highlighted the environmental benefits, emphasizing the importance of decarbonizing transport and encouraging public transport usage.

Chris Conway, chief executive of Translink, called the hourly Enterprise service a “massive boost for people, communities and the environment, and represents a tremendous opportunity for economic growth.”

Overcoming Past Challenges

This expansion comes after Irish Rail faced criticism last month for punctuality issues with updated Dublin commuter timetables which were scrapped. The northern lines were among those affected.

The successful implementation of the hourly service signifies a positive step forward for rail travel on the island of Ireland.
