LEXINGTON, KY – Residents of Lexington, Kentucky, are urged to exercise caution after another skunk tested positive for rabies, according to the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.
The infected skunk was discovered in the Indian Hills and Stonewall neighborhoods. Two dogs belonging to a resident in the area encountered the skunk, with one sustaining a bite. The health department swiftly responded, posting warning signs throughout the neighborhood to inform residents and advise pet owners to remain vigilant.
This recent case follows the detection of another rabid skunk in the Andover Hills neighborhood earlier this month, highlighting the growing concern about rabies transmission in the region.
Rabies: A Serious Threat to Pets and Humans
Rabies is a viral disease affecting humans, pets, and wild animals. Transmission typically occurs through the saliva of an infected animal, often via a bite. The disease can be fatal, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures.
Kentucky law mandates that all dogs, cats, and ferrets receive regular rabies vaccinations. LFCHD officials strongly encourage residents to ensure their pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date.
