Bulgaria Battles Lice outbreak in Schools

Bulgaria is currently dealing with a significant head lice outbreak affecting schools across the country. Health authorities report a sharp increase in cases, prompting concerns among parents and educators. This isn’t a new problem,but the scale of the current outbreak is raising alarms.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the surge in lice infestations began in November and continues to spread. Several schools have temporarily closed classrooms for intensive disinfection. Experts attribute the increase to a combination of factors, including close proximity of students, shared personal items like hats and combs, and possibly increased resistance to over-the-counter treatments.

“We’re seeing a higher number of cases than usual for this time of year,” stated Dr. Angel Kunchev, Chief State Health Inspector. “It’s crucial for parents to regularly check their children’s hair and take immediate action if lice are detected.”

What are the symptoms? Itching is the most common sign, but not everyone experiences it. Visible lice or nits (lice eggs) attached to the hair shaft are definitive indicators. Nits look like tiny, pearly white specks.

How can you prevent it? Prevention is key. Teach children not to share personal items. Regularly check children’s hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck. Tie long hair back to minimize contact.

Treatment options: Over-the-counter shampoos and lotions containing permethrin or pyrethrins are often effective.However, resistance is growing, so consult a doctor or pharmacist if initial treatments fail.thoroughly wash bedding and clothing in hot water and dry on high heat. Vacuum carpets and furniture.

The Ministry of Health is working with schools to provide information and guidance on prevention and treatment. They emphasize the importance of early detection and prompt action to control the outbreak. Parents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with school officials to protect their children and the wider community.
