Healthcare Subsidies Set to Expire: Millions Face Premium Hikes

Millions of Americans could see important increases in their healthcare costs if federal subsidies expire on January 1st. NPR speaks with Gerard Anderson, a professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, about the potential impact.

KFF Health News reports the average premium will more than double. Anderson explains who will feel the biggest pinch. “Anyone who makes about $50,000 to $200,000 a year is going to have the greatest increases in their premiums,” he says, “simply as the additional subsidies really benefited that population the greatest.”

The impact won’t be uniform. Several factors will influence individual premium changes.”It is indeed all of the above,” anderson clarifies. “It depends on how sick you are, what plan you have, what other plans are in the area, and even your previous plan’s cost.” He estimates the typical person will pay roughly twice as much in premiums, but stresses that each individual’s experience will vary.

The consequences extend beyond premium increases.Anderson predicts approximately 4 million people could lose coverage altogether, and another 10 million may experience reduced coverage. This shift will also affect healthcare providers. “Doctors and hospitals will all of a sudden see more patients that can’t pay,” he warns, indicating a broader strain on the healthcare system.
