Farewell to the Merksem Viaduct: ‘Oosterlicht’ Event Draws Massive Crowds

The Merksem viaduct in Antwerp is set to be demolished as part of the larger Oosterweel connection project, a crucial undertaking to deepen the Antwerp ring road and construct the Channel tunnels. Before its dismantling, the public was invited to a symbolic farewell over three evenings through an immersive experience called ‘Oosterlicht.’

‘Oosterlicht’ featured a one-kilometer light and sound trail positioned beneath the viaduct, offering attendees a unique outlook and a chance to reflect on the structure’s history. Approximately 14,000 places were made available for the event, and demand proved exceptionally high, with all tickets claimed within a single weekend, demonstrating important public interest in the project and the viaduct’s legacy.

The demolition of the Merksem viaduct is a key step in improving traffic flow and infrastructure within the Antwerp region, ultimately aiming to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion. The Oosterweel connection is a large-scale project intended to address long-standing transportation challenges in the area.
