This is a first in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. A sentinel pollinarium, a space intended to anticipate the arrival of pollen, should see the light of day in nice in 2026. What is it exactly? How will this system be set up and what will it be used for? We take stock.

This is a long-awaited system, which has already proven itself in several cities in the west of France and which the city of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) plans to deploy in 2026. On the brand new paillon promenade, a “sentinel pollenarium”, an installation intended to anticipate the arrival of allergenic pollen, must be set up.
“It is indeed a kind of biopsy which then allows health professionals to be alerted to future allergies.“, explained the deputy mayor in charge of health, Richard Chemla, on july 15, 2024, during the motion presenting the installation.Concretely, a sentinel pollinarium is an installation deployed in many French cities, which makes it possible to anticipate and react quickly to the production of allergenic pollen. “It is a garden maintained by the community’s green spaces department. Every day, we observe the beginning and end of the pollen emission period from plants to know when to alert the population“, explains Salomé Pasquet, botanist within the Association of Sentinel Pollinariums of France (APSF).
In fact, municipal services plant around fifty, even a hundred, different species of plants known to produce allergenic pollen. These are then monitored daily by trained teams.
