Ukraine Accused of Deadly Drone Attack in Russian-Held Kherson
Russia alleges Ukraine killed at least 24 people, including a child, in a drone attack targeting a hotel adn cafe during new Year celebrations in a Russian-controlled area of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The attack occurred in Khorly, a coastal village.
Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-installed governor of the region, initially reported the claim on Telegram.Following this, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other high-ranking officials accused Ukraine of a “terrorist attack.”

Saldo shared photos purporting to show the aftermath of the attack, but Al Jazeera has not yet been able to independently verify them. The images depict at least one body covered by a white sheet.
The building sustained notable fire damage, and apparent bloodstains are visible on the ground.
Saldo stated that three Ukrainian drones struck the site of the new Year celebrations in what he described as a “purposeful strike” against civilians. He claims many people were burned alive.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry reports that initial data indicates 24 fatalities and 50 injuries. They assert the attack was premeditated, with drones specifically targeting areas where civilians had gathered for New Year’s Eve.
