Kanlaon Volcano Eruption Suspends Tourist Activities in Negros Island

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has issued a suspension on tourist activities in several areas of Negros Island due to the ashfall caused by the recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

Affected Areas and Activities

Areas impacted by the suspension include La Castellana, La Carlota City, Bago City, and Murcia in Negros Occidental, as well as Canlaon City in Negros Oriental. The DOT has temporarily halted trekking, swimming, farm site visits, and day tour activities in these locations.

Numerous popular tourist destinations within or near the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone have also been closed. These include Guintubdan Spring, Buenos Aires Resort, Mambukal Resort, and Sugar Valley Coffee Farm. Additionally, the Canlaon City government has closed Kanlaon Inland Resort and Eco-Tourism, Padudusan Falls, Bao-bao Viewing Deck, and Quipot Falls as a precautionary measure for public safety.

Safety Concerns and Evacuations

The Tourist Department strongly advises the public to avoid approaching or entering both the permanent danger zone and areas heavily impacted by ashfall.

The ashfall from Kanlaon’s eruption has extended its reach, affecting 30 cities and towns across Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Antique, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In response to the volcanic activity, the Office of Civil Defense reports that 39,258 individuals from 9,942 families have been evacuated to safer locations.
