BNP Paribas has lost its attempt to overturn a conviction related to its involvement in abuses linked to the Sudanese government. A federal judge confirmed a jury verdict from October, requiring the bank to pay $20.75 million in damages to three victims.

Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who is also overseeing the case against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, rejected BNP Paribas’s request to dismiss the conviction. The case centers on the bank’s actions during the nearly 30-year rule of former Sudanese dictator Omar Al-Bashir (1989-2019).

The jury initially found BNP Paribas complicit in abuses, and Wednesday’s ruling upholds that decision. The $20.75 million will be paid to the three victims who brought the case forward.
