Egyptian President El-Sisi Meets Irish Leaders to Discuss Gaza Crisis and Bilateral Ties
Dublin witnessed a significant diplomatic visit this week as Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Irish President Michael D. Higgins and Taoiseach Simon Harris. The discussions centered around the ongoing war in Gaza, the dire humanitarian situation, and efforts to bolster relations between the two nations.
Gaza Conflict Takes Center Stage
According to a statement from President Higgins’s office, the suffering in Gaza, particularly the lack of a ceasefire, was the primary focus of the talks. “The outrageous suffering in the absence of a ceasefire in Gaza was the central part of their discussion,” the statement read.
Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for international recognition of the Palestinian state. “Agreement on the need to expand international recognition of the Palestinian state” was highlighted by Egyptian presidential spokesman Mohamed al-Shenawy.
Ireland’s Recognition of Palestine
Ireland, along with several other European countries, formally recognized the State of Palestine in May, a move that sparked criticism from Israel. President el-Sisi expressed appreciation for Ireland’s “courageous positions in support of the Palestinian cause,” as stated by Mr. Shenawy.
Medical Evacuation of Gazan Children
In a humanitarian gesture, Ireland has agreed to medically evacuate eight Gazan children and their families from Cairo to Dublin soon. This action follows a request from the World Health Organization.
Taoiseach Raises Case of Irish Mother’s Missing Children
During their meeting, Taoiseach Simon Harris raised the case of an Irish mother, Mandy Kelly, whose two sons have been detained by their father in Egypt for over two years. Despite a custody order, Ms. Kelly has had no contact with Kareem and Zayn since June 2022. “I intend to speak to President [Abdel] el-Sisi in relation to this today, and either myself or my officials will be in contact with Mandy Kelly,” Mr. Harris stated.
Egypt’s Role in Humanitarian Assistance
Mr. Harris commended Egypt for its crucial role in facilitating the evacuation of several Irish citizens from Gaza. He also acknowledged Egypt’s vital role in delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, who are enduring a severe humanitarian crisis.
Historic Visit Marks Enhanced Relations
President el-Sisi’s visit to Ireland, the first by an Egyptian president since 2006, signifies the strengthening ties between the two nations. This European tour, which included stops in Norway and Denmark, highlights Egypt’s commitment to engaging with international partners on key global issues.
