ACS CAN Urges Swift Congressional Action to Restore Expired Healthcare Tax Credits
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is intensifying its call for immediate bipartisan action from the Senate and House to reinstate enhanced premium tax credits, following a recent House vote on the matter. The lapse of these credits is creating a critical healthcare affordability crisis, particularly for cancer patients and survivors.
With the expiration of the enhanced tax credits, numerous individuals who relied on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace to secure affordable health insurance are now facing the prospect of losing coverage. “Now that the enhanced premium tax credits have expired, many cancer patients and survivors who have been able to afford health insurance coverage through the Marketplace are facing the heartbreaking reality of a January without coverage. For individuals in active cancer treatment, this is life-threatening,” stated Lisa Lacasse, president of ACS CAN.
For over two years, ACS CAN has advocated for the extension of these vital tax credits, emphasizing the potential for millions to lose access to complete and affordable health insurance. The organization warns that forcing individuals to forgo necessary cancer screenings, early detection measures, and essential treatment due to cost concerns directly jeopardizes their lives.
“Forcing those who can no longer afford coverage to delay potentially lifesaving cancer screening, detection and treatment, puts their lives on the line,” Lacasse added.
ACS CAN acknowledges the growing recognition among lawmakers in both the House and Senate regarding the urgency of this issue. they emphasize that extending the enhanced tax credits presents a crucial opportunity to address the healthcare affordability crisis and safeguard the wellbeing of constituents.
