Geoffrey Owens Opens Up About Financial Struggles Despite Acting Career

Geoffrey Owens, best known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on the iconic sitcom “The Cosby Show,” recently revealed his ongoing financial challenges during an appearance on V-103 Atlanta’s “Big Tigger Morning Show.” Owens candidly discussed his experiences, shedding light on the realities of income stability in the entertainment industry.

Owens’ story gained national attention in 2018 when photos surfaced of him bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s. While many assumed he was struggling financially, Owens clarified that he had actually quit the grocery chain prior to the photos going viral. He explained that the unexpected attention made him uncomfortable, fearing constant scrutiny and invasion of privacy.

“I quit Trader Joe’s actually before the news hit,” Owens shared. “It was strange because someone had been in the store taking pictures. … And I was like, well now that this is breaking, I’m not going to feel comfortable working in this store wondering who’s around with a camera. It’s gonna be just too weird. I’m a very private person.”

Despite receiving support from prominent figures like Tyler Perry, who offered him a role on OWN’s “The Haves and Have Nots,” and Nicki Minaj, who gifted him $25,000, Owens emphasized that financial stability remained elusive. He chose to donate Minaj’s generous gift to charity, stating, “at the time, it seemed like the right thing to do.”

Owens expressed gratitude towards Trader Joe’s, describing it as a “wonderful place to work” and revealing that he had even inquired about returning. However, he admitted, “Even today, right now, as we speak, I still struggle to make a living. I struggle every day to make my ends meet.”

Addressing misconceptions about residual income from “The Cosby Show,” Owens clarified that his earnings were modest, noting, “They were never particularly wonderful for me because I did maybe 20% of the show. Plus, the show went away for a while because of what happened with Bill.”

Owens’ candid interview offers a glimpse into the often-hidden realities faced by actors, highlighting the challenges of maintaining financial security even with successful acting careers. His story underscores the importance of financial literacy and planning within the entertainment industry.
