Japan Officially Bids to Host the 2025 Rugby world Cup

Tokyo, Japan – January 24, 2024 – The Japan Rugby football Union (JRFU) formally launched its bid to host the 2025 Rugby World Cup today, aiming to build on the success of the 2019 tournament. The proclamation follows initial intentions expressed by JRFU President Masato Tsuchida in September 2023.

Japan previously made history as the first Asian nation to host the Rugby World Cup in 2019, an event widely considered a resounding success. The JRFU is now aiming for an even larger and more impactful tournament in 2025.

“We will create a model for the scale of the competition and business. We are aiming for a bigger competition than the 2019 competition. We will show this in numbers,” a JRFU official stated.

The bid faces competition from a joint proposal from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, and also a bid from Spain.World Rugby is scheduled to announce a preferred candidate in May 2024 and make a final decision in November 2024.

The Rugby World Cup, held every four years since 1987, is a major international sporting event, attracting the second-largest spectator attendance globally after the FIFA World Cup.
