Fodor’s has published its annual “Banned Destinations List” for 2026, advising travelers to temporarily exclude certain locations from their plans.

The initiative aims to highlight places where tourism is unsustainable and causes significant damage to the environment,infrastructure,and the quality of life for local residents. The list is described as “a gentle signal to slow down-not forever, but until the destination recovers.”

Mass tourism leads to negative consequences such as overcrowded streets and public transport, rising housing costs for locals, environmental damage, and increased emissions from air traffic. experts state that traveling “without a trace” will become increasingly arduous in 2026.

Destinations on the list include:

* Isola Sacra (Italy): threatened by large-scale growth and a planned cruise ship port, causing protests.
* Canary Islands (Spain): Receiving around 18 million visitors annually, leading to protests over ecosystem destruction and unaffordability.
* Antarctica: Experiencing rapidly growing tourism (approximately 120,000 visitors in the 2018 season, expected to double), threatening fragile ecosystems.
* Glacier National Park (USA): Glaciers are rapidly disappearing due to climate change, leading to “last resort tourism” that overloads infrastructure and disrupts wildlife.

The list for 2026 includes seven destinations sharing the common problem of mass tourism exceeding acceptable levels.Experts encourage travelers to choose less crowded routes, support enduring tourism, and respect local communities. Responsible travel is presented as an investment in preserving the planet.

The “red list” has been scaled back, removing destinations like South Africa, Brazil, and mexico.

Countries still on the red list are:

* Panama
* Colombia
* Venezuela
* Peru
* Ecuador
* Haiti
* Dominican Republic
