Dealerships Await €300 Million in Ecobonus Reimbursements, potential Delays Threaten Electric Vehicle Deliveries

Dealerships in Italy are awaiting over €300 million in reimbursements for the Ecobonus (incentives for purchasing electric and hybrid vehicles), raising concerns about potential delays in delivering vehicles to customers. The issue was highlighted by UNRAE (National Union of Foreign Vehicle Representatives) in relation to the January 2026 Italian car market results.

UNRAE has been actively urging the acceleration of reimbursement procedures, stating that the financial strain on dealerships could impact the registration times of incentivized vehicles. As stated by UNRAE, “the sector is financially exposed for over 300 million euros, with the risk that any delays could also be reflected in the registration times of the incentivized cars.” https://www.unrae.it/

Not all dealerships possess the financial capacity to front the Ecobonus amounts for customers. Delays in reimbursement could thus lead to extended delivery times for new electric vehicles.

To streamline the 2025 incentive process, a dedicated telematics platform was implemented for dealerships. Reimbursements were expected to begin in the coming days, but the situation remains uncertain. Any complications could further prolong delivery times for customers who have purchased electric vehicles utilizing the incentive.

The Italian government introduced the Ecobonus scheme to encourage the adoption of environmentally kind vehicles. Details of the current Ecobonus scheme, including eligibility criteria and incentive amounts, can be found on the official government website: https://www.mise.gov.it/en/incentives-for-mobility (link to the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy).
