Latvia’s Cinema Industry: Rising Ticket Prices and Growing Audiences
Despite a notable increase in the cost of admission, Latvia’s cinema industry is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, with attendance steadily climbing in recent years. Data from the National Cinema Center reveals that the average movie ticket price has risen by nearly 40% over the past decade, from €4.85 in 2016 to €6.73 in 2023.However, this price hike hasn’t deterred moviegoers, as evidenced by the sale of over 2.16 million tickets last year – an increase of approximately 70,000 compared to 2022.
The Latvian cinema landscape has faced considerable fluctuations in the last ten years. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, annual cinema visits consistently surpassed 2.5 million. The pandemic, however, brought a dramatic downturn, with visits plummeting to under 900,000 in 2020 and further declining to roughly 500,000 in 2021. Consequently, the average number of cinema visits per capita also decreased, falling from a pre-pandemic level to 0.47 visits in 2020 and 0.27 visits in 2021.
Fortunately, the industry has demonstrated resilience, with a clear recovery trend emerging in recent years. In 2022, cinema attendance exceeded 1.7 million, and this momentum continued into 2023,surpassing the two million mark. This positive trend is further reflected in the increasing frequency of cinema visits per resident, rising from 1.08 visits in 2023 to 1.17 visits in 2023.
This data suggests a strong continued interest in the cinematic experience among the Latvian population, even in the face of rising costs. The industry’s recovery highlights the enduring appeal of movies and the social experience of attending a cinema.
