Blizzard conditions are impacting several communities near the Lake Huron shoreline and northwest of London, bringing near-zero visibility, strong winds and heavy blowing snow.

Environment Canada is warning that areas including London–Parkhill–Eastern Middlesex County, Goderich–Bluewater–Southern Huron County, Wingham–Blyth–Northern Huron County, Saugeen Shores–Kincardine–Southern Bruce County, and Watford–Pinery Park–Eastern Lambton County are experiencing dangerous winter weather conditions.

Strong northwest wind gusts of up to 70 km/h are combining with snowfall and snow squalls to create widespread blowing snow. Visibility may frequently be near zero in exposed and wind-prone areas, particularly close to the Lake Huron shoreline.

An additional 10 centimetres of snow is expected today.

Blizzard conditions are expected to ease later this morning as winds gradually weaken. However, lake effect snow and local blowing snow will continue into the afternoon, especially for communities closest to Lake Huron.

The City of London proper is not expected to experience full blizzard conditions, but reduced visibility due to local blowing snow is still anticipated.

Travel strongly discouraged

Officials warn that travel will be dangerous and, at times, likely impossible due to near-zero visibility. Road closures are possible as conditions rapidly deteriorate in open areas.

Residents are being urged to avoid travel and outdoor activities if possible. Those who must travel should ensure they have an emergency plan and keep supplies in their vehicle, including extra blankets, jumper cables and other winter essentials.

If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle and stay sheltered until conditions improve.

Motorists are advised to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, particularly along highways and rural roads near the Lake Huron shoreline.
