Daniel Cormier Worried About UFC ‘Big Problem’ & Proposed Solution

Over the history of the promotion, it has always been widely dominated by fighters from the United States, however, that isn’t currently the case.

And with the UFC White House event coming this June 14, former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormieris worried about the state of American MMA.

Cormier worried about the lack of American champions

On June 14, the premier promotion plans to celebrate the history of America on the lawn of the White House with their historic event.

But the one huge problem they are currently facing is the fact that there are currently only two champions representing the country, Kayla Harrison and Mackenzie Dern.

Justin slaveje recently won the interim lightweight title, however, he has the huge task of dethroning Ilia Topuria before he can fly the flag for the American men as an undisputed champion.

Not only is it a bleak time for American MMA as a whole at the moment, but in the promotion’s most historically popular weight class, heavyweight, there is currently a huge issue with the state of the division.

“It’s not dead because Tom Aspinall is an absolute stud,” Cormier said about the division in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

“I think Ciryl Gane proved that there’s a lot of competition in that weight class for him in that last fight. Jon Jones is still lingering… But the heavyweight division is always going to be OK because it doesn’t take much to get people excited.”

Cormier went on to talk about the more pressing issue at hand, and detailed how he plans to tackle it himself.

“The bigger problem is the American’s because not only do we not have an American in the top 10 at heavyweight, we don’t have an American in the top 10 pound-for-pound in any weight.

“Justin Gaethje now is the interim champion, it’s the only belt we have on American males. But we’ll fix that. We’ll start training some wrestlers,” he continued.

The UFC commentator continues to pass down his expert knowledge to the next generation, training wrestling at Gilroy High School in California.

The UFC is crying out for exciting heavyweight prospect

Although Gaethje may be the closest chance America has to crown a male champion quickly, not many fans are giving him a chance against ‘El Matador’.

And in fact, many fans believe the next chance America has of having a UFC champion, lies with a fighter not even currently signed to the promotion.

Gable Steveson is currently 2-0 in professional MMA and he is taking the regional scene by storm. With Jon Jones behind him as a coach, the 25-year-old could get fast-tracked to a UFC title and be the region’s next chance at a champion.
