Vitamin D and Calcium Won’t Prevent Falls

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently released a draft recommendation challenging the long-held belief that vitamin D and calcium supplements prevent falls and fractures in older adults. After reviewing extensive research, the panel concluded with “moderate certainty” that these supplements have little to no effect on reducing the risk of falls or fractures in people aged 60 and older. This doesn’t mean these nutrients are irrelevant, as both vitamin D and calcium are crucial for overall bone health.

For individuals at risk of deficiency, including those with osteoporosis, digestive disorders, or limited sun exposure, supplements can provide essential support. Research shows supplementation can be beneficial in cases of vitamin D deficiency or low calcium intake. This new recommendation highlights the importance of focusing on other preventive measures for older adults. Regular exercise, particularly weight-bearing activities like strength training and balance exercises, are key to maintaining bone density and stability. Ensuring a safe home environment, free of tripping hazards and well-lit, can also significantly reduce fall risk.

Mobility issues, reduced eyesight, and certain medications can also compromise balance and increase the likelihood of falls.
