The department of Santa Cruzthe most populated Boliviarecorded its first death from chikungunya this year. This death occurs as health authorities prepare to trigger the red alert in the face of a surge in infections, the Departmental Health Service (SEDES) announced on February 9. The victim was an 80-year-old man suffering from underlying medical conditions.

This death occurs in a context of high transmission of the virus, spread by mosquitoes Aedes aegyptialso a vector of dengue.

Official figures show 1,398 confirmed cases of chikungunya, about 400 more than the previous week. Carlos Alberto Hurtado Solares, head of epidemiology, indicated that 26 patients are hospitalized, six of whom are in serious condition, including two newborns.

Faced with this epidemic, the authorities announced the immediate strengthening of campaigns to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, the fumigation of urban and peri-urban areas, and the coordination of operations with epidemiology teams.

They also reiterated their call to the population to intensify prevention measures, in particular the elimination of containers containing stagnant water.

Health officials recognize that Santa Cruz is facing an outbreak that poses a particular risk to the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses.
