Duolingo PvP Feature: Learn Languages Like a Game

GadgetDIVA – Global education application, Duolingo, officially launches a player-to-play chess game mode Player-vs-Player (PvP) for Android users. This step is a major expansion after previously a similar feature was successfully introduced on the iOS platform at the end of 2025. Now, more people can hone logic and strategy through chess in a way that is easier to understand.

The presence of this feature in the Indonesian market is very relevant considering the public’s interest in learning while playing methods (gamification) very high. A local study even revealed that the majority of students felt much more motivated when educational material was delivered through an interactive and challenging format like a game.

This chess course is specially designed for those who are just starting out. Instead of just memorizing theory, Duolingo applies its trademark hands-on practice method. This aims to ensure that one of the most legendary strategy games in the world no longer feels difficult and can be enjoyed by all groups.

Irene Tong, Regional Marketing Manager for Duolingo Southeast Asia, explained that her party wants to eliminate the intimidating impression of playing chess. The main focus of this update is to create a more inclusive and beginner-friendly PvP experience, so that chess becomes a means to practice critical thinking while building connections between users.

In the learning process, users will be guided by the character Oscar who acts as a virtual trainer. The curriculum is structured in stages, starting from an introduction to the basic moves of chess pieces to solving tactical puzzles. Most of the material is presented in the form of short challenges so that users do not feel bored.

Via tab Matchesusers can select the “Play a Person” option to immediately compete against opponents of equal skill level real-time. With the influx of millions of Android users, the matchmaking system has now become much faster as the availability of players worldwide has increased significantly.

It doesn’t stop here, Duolingo is preparing additional features such as playing with friends, match review, and material for advanced levels. Expansion plans to a website version are also being worked on so that chess learning can be accessed from any device more flexibly.

As a celebration of the launch in Indonesia, Duolingo is holding an interactive event at the Blok M Literacy Park, Jakarta, until February 13 2026. There, visitors can try out a giant chess board, meet the King Duo mascot, and take part in various exciting challenges for free to practice directly what they learn in the application.
