FC Basel lost for the fourth time in their fifth game under Stephan Lichtsteiner. Instead of starting the big race to catch up, the struggling champions have to struggle with opposing standards and their own mentality.

If anyone in Basel actually had the illusion that FCB could get back into the championship race, these fantasies should finally be a thing of the past after the 2-0 defeat against Sion.
But it’s not just the 16 points behind leader Thun that should give the struggling champions pause. If the Cup does not go to St. Gallen at the end of May, only the first three places in the table will be eligible to take part in the European competition.
So does FCB have to be careful not to end up missing the absolute minimum goal? “Yes, of course, that’s certainly the case,” says Stephan Lichtsteiner (42). «I’ve always said that we have to do our homework. If we don’t win our games, we don’t have to look up.”
Again two goals conceded after standard
What should particularly give the new FCB coach something to think about: After Pilsen and the FCZ, his team conceded a goal for the third time in the fifth game after a stationary ball. In Valais, both goals were conceded after an opponent’s standard. “It suits our current situation that this is happening to us twice today. We made too many simple mistakes,” summarizes Dominik Schmid (27).
The left-back, who has played more minutes than any other FCB professional this season, should actually have had a break in the tourbillon. But because defense chief Flavius Daniliuc was injured early on, Schmid still ended up on the pitch for almost 75 minutes. He couldn’t say whether the game in Valais was a step backwards after the supposed liberation against the FCZ. “But we definitely imagined this away trip differently,” said Schmid.
Lichtsteiner demands mentality
His coach sees the reason for the defeat as more than just the insufficiently defended standard situations. “We started the game well, but then there was a break,” says Lichtsteiner. Sion was more snappy and deserved to win the game.
«We didn’t show enough mentality. We have to force it more,” the FCB coach demands of his team. After the shockingly weak performance in Valais, there are doubts as to whether his team will be able to do better on Sunday. After the Master Express has already left Basel, there is a risk of missing the last train to Europe if they lose against Lugano.
