Quantum Comic Ends Run in Print, Faces High Street Challenges

The British comic anthology Quantum has concluded its print run, with the final issue now on sale, publisher Time Bomb Comics announced on February 15, 2026. The comic’s journey has been marked by difficulties navigating the changing landscape of UK high street newsstand distribution.

A Rollercoaster Ride for the Anthology

Launched in April 2023 by Time Bomb Comics, Quantum aimed to be a mainstream British anthology comic with an independent ethos, sold through high street newsagents. Over its run, the title featured diverse stories spanning alternate worlds, western horror, steampunk, historical adventure, twisted thrillers, and unique takes on superheroes. The final issue includes tales starring Major Rakhana, a steampunk space-ace, a superhero story titled “The Very Strange Reappearance of Peter Thomson” by Dave West and Gustaffo Vargas, and “Space Banshee Exorcist,” featuring the character Fenshaw.

Challenges on the High Street

Quantum’s fortunes were significantly impacted by the sale of WHSmith high street stores to private equity firm Modella Capital in 2025, which also owns Hobbycraft and Original Factory Shop. The changes at WHSmith, coupled with broader issues in UK newsstand distribution, made reaching an audience through traditional retail channels increasingly difficult.

The sale of WHSmith to Modella Capital has led to uncertainty regarding product focus and specialization within TG Jones, the rebranded newsagent chain. Experts have questioned the branding choices and the extensive, unwieldy product range, suggesting a need for a tighter focus to achieve success.

Shifting to Alternative Distribution Models

Time Bomb Comics previously announced a hiatus for Quantum in April 2025, with issue #12 being the last for a while. Existing subscribers will receive a limited-edition variant of Quantum #12 in April. The publisher cited challenges in getting the comic into shops reliably, due to factors like printer errors and the closure of local WHSmith stores, as reasons for the pause.

The publisher is exploring alternative distribution methods, including crowdfunding, subscription models, and digital distribution, which offer a greater percentage of the cover price.

Future of Time Bomb Comics

Despite the conclusion of Quantum’s print run, publisher Steve Tanner remains committed to the comics form and is likely to apply lessons learned from this experience to future projects.
