Scottsdale School Art Director Resigns After Smuggling Arrest

A former Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) art director, Victor Michael Bobbett, resigned after his arrest on federal charges related to human smuggling. The case has prompted debate within the district regarding the appropriate response to the situation.

Details of the Arrest

Victor Bobbett was arrested on January 28th after a traffic stop by the Tohono O’odham Police Department (TOPD) near Sells, Arizona. Border Patrol agents were alerted due to the vehicle’s location in an area frequently used by smuggling organizations. A search of Bobbett’s SUV revealed water bottles and blankets, indicators commonly associated with human smuggling operations.

Bobbett allegedly admitted to agents that he was transporting four individuals into the U.S. In exchange for $3,000 per person. His phone contained pinned locations and directions consistent with human smuggling activities.

The Snapchat Connection

According to court documents, Bobbett was recruited through Snapchat. He contacted a user who posted about a large sum of cash, inquiring about their source of income. The user then explained they needed drivers and continued the conversation on WhatsApp. He was promised a total of $12,000 for transporting the four people from a pickup point near San Miguel, Arizona, to Phoenix.

SUSD Response and Board Debate

The Scottsdale Unified School District was informed of Bobbett’s arrest on January 27th. He was immediately placed on administrative depart and subsequently resigned on February 6th.

At a February 10th meeting, the SUSD Governing Board debated whether to accept Bobbett’s resignation or pursue termination. Whereas the district’s attorney advised accepting the resignation to immediately complete his employment, some board members felt termination was more appropriate given the nature of the charges. The board voted 3-1 to accept the resignation, with one abstention.

Background on Bobbett’s Employment

Victor Bobbett began working for SUSD in February 2018 as an art director/graphic design. The district stated that all appropriate hiring processes were followed, including background checks, fingerprint clearance and reference checks.

Current Status

As of February 13, 2026, a trial date had not been scheduled for Bobbett. He was released from custody on July 30th, 2025, pending further legal proceedings.
