2026 Winter Olympics and Beyond: A Glance at Future Host Cities
The Winter Olympics returned to Italy this year for the first time in two decades. The 2026 Games, co-hosted by Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, are set to bring novel triumphs and losses. Looking ahead, the Games will travel to France and the United States in the years that follow.
Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo: 2026 Hosts
In the more than a century since the first Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924, 21 cities across 13 countries have hosted the event. Milan, hosting for the first time, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, becoming only the fourth city to host the Winter Olympics more than once, will share hosting duties in 2026. The distance between Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo is approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles), making these the most decentralized Winter Games in history. Source
Milan will host the “ice” disciplines, such as figure skating and hockey, while Cortina d’Ampezzo will be the center for “snow” events, including curling and women’s alpine skiing. Source
Future Winter Olympic Games
2030: The French Alps
The 2030 Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place in the French Alps from February 1-17, marking the fourth time France has hosted the Winter Games. France has also hosted three Summer Games, all in Paris. Source
The Games will be held in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançon, and Nice, within the largest interconnected ski area on the planet, spanning approximately 600 km. Source
2034: Salt Lake City, Utah
Utah will host the 2034 Winter Olympics from February 10-26. Salt Lake City, which previously hosted the Games in 2002, will be central to the event, with competitions also held in nearby communities. Source

Host cities for the 2038 and 2042 Winter Olympics have not yet been selected, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is in discussions with Switzerland to potentially host the 2038 Games. Source
