Yusei Matsui’s ‘Hero Fugitive’ Concludes After Five-Year Run

The manga series Hero Fugitive (originally titled Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi) by Yusei Matsui concluded its five-year serialization in Japan on Monday, February 16, 2026, with the release of the 12th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump.

A Five-Year Journey Comes to an End

The series will consist of a total of 27 collected volumes, with the final four volumes scheduled for release on March 4th, May 1st, August 4th, and October 2nd, respectively.

Matsui’s Legacy Continues

Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi follows Yusei Matsui’s previous works, Nogami Neuro (2005-2009) and Assassination Classroom (2012-2016), both of which were similarly published in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Matsui launched the action-adventure manga in Shueisha’s weekly magazine in January 2021.

Adaptations and International Release

An anime adaptation of Hero Fugitive, produced by CloverWorks (known for Bocchi the Rock!, My Dress-Up Darling, and The Promised Neverland), premiered in summer 2024 with a 12-episode season. A second season is slated to begin airing in Japan in July 2026, directed by Yuta Yamazaki (assistant director on Wonder Egg Priority).

Planeta Cómic began publishing the series in Spanish in February 2023, with fourteen volumes currently available as of January 2026, priced at €7.95 per volume.

The Story of Tokiyuki Houjou

Set in Kamakura during the Muromachi period, Hero Fugitive tells the story of Tokiyuki Houjou, a young man who escapes a difficult past and embarks on a journey for revenge.
