Lufthansa Finally Cleared to Sell Full Business Class on Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Lufthansa can now fully monetize its Boeing 787 Dreamliners after resolving a certification issue that left a significant portion of its business class cabin empty for months. The German airline announced on Monday that it will begin selling tickets for all but three seats in its Allegris business class on the 787.

Certification Challenges and Delays

Lufthansa’s new Allegris cabin concept, featuring direct aisle access from all seats, initially launched on the Airbus A350-900 in May 2024. While the A350 rollout faced initial supply chain hurdles, the subsequent introduction of the Allegris cabins on the Boeing 787 in October 2025 presented a more significant challenge: business class seat certification.

The complexity stemmed from the five staggered seat configurations within the cabin – some with doors for enhanced privacy, others with extended legroom or longer beds. The 787’s slightly smaller fuselage and different contouring compared to the A350 made it difficult to demonstrate to regulators that passengers could safely evacuate from every seat configuration in an emergency. for months, only four of the 28 business class seats – the front-row Business Class Suites – were available for sale, leaving the remaining 24 unoccupied. This was a substantial loss for Lufthansa, as business class is a key revenue driver for airlines.

Resolution and Booking Details

Beginning April 15, 2026, Lufthansa plans to offer 25 business-class seats for sale on its 787 flights, with three seats in the second row remaining blocked. Bookings are now open.

Lufthansa’s Allegris business class offers several seat options, each with varying price points:

• Classic Seats: Available with the standard fare.
• First Row Suites: Premium pricing.
• Privacy Seats: Located next to the window, with added cost.
• Extra Space Seats: Offering more legroom, at an additional fee.
• Extra Long Bed Seats: Featuring a sleeping surface exceeding seven feet, with a surcharge.

The three second-row seats currently unavailable for booking are two privacy seats and one extra-legroom seat.

Fleet Expansion and Route Network

Lufthansa currently operates eight Allegris-equipped Dreamliners and anticipates a fleet of 29 by the end of 2027. Lufthansa’s Boeing 787 aircraft will initially serve routes from Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Cape Town, Shanghai, Hyderabad, Hong Kong, and Austin. New York-JFK and Los Angeles will be added in June, followed by Delhi in July.

The Allegris cabin is also being retrofitted onto Lufthansa’s existing A350s and Boeing 747-8s, as well as its future Boeing 777Xs. However, the Boeing 747-8 upper deck will feature a split business class configuration, with the lower deck offering Allegris seating and the upper deck retaining the original cabin.
