Nintendo Switch Hardware Enabled ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ Design Freedom
The success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom isn’t solely attributable to its expansive open world or the player’s creative freedom. According to Eiji Aonuma, a veteran producer for the Zelda series, the game’s design was significantly enabled by the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch hardware.
Hardware Drives Design Innovation
In a quote published in Keza MacDonald’s book, Super Nintendo (as reported by Polygon), Aonuma explained that advancements in hardware not only enhance the visual appeal of games but as well grant developers greater latitude in realizing previously challenging ideas. “The idea of providing a seamless gaming experience is not just about removing limitations, but also greatly influences the design of the game itself,” Aonuma stated.
From Dungeons to Open Worlds: A Shift in Design Philosophy
Aonuma revealed that traditional Zelda dungeon designs were, in part, a product of past hardware limitations. Developers previously relied on structured environments with clear entrances and exits, leading to the prevalence of dungeons. “In the past, we needed a situation where there was an entrance and an exit, and that’s why we needed dungeons,” Aonuma explained.
With the evolution of technology, game worlds can now be more interconnected, eliminating the require for compartmentalized “rooms” like traditional dungeons. “Now all these things can be connected. This freedom is made possible by the evolution of hardware, and it also positively influences the design side of games,” he added.
‘Tears of the Kingdom’ as a Showcase for Player Agency
The Zelda team actively encourages player experimentation, and Tears of the Kingdom was designed to maximize possibilities. “We sense good when we see how people play. We desire to make everything possible for them,” Aonuma said. This design philosophy is evident in the game’s crafting system and physics engine, which have allowed players to create unique machines, vehicles, and combat strategies since its release in May 2023.
A Technical Achievement on Aging Hardware
Tears of the Kingdom, along with its predecessor Breath of the Wild, is considered a significant technical accomplishment for the original Nintendo Switch console. Despite the Switch being several years old, Tears of the Kingdom continues to surprise players with innovative uses of the system, even in scenarios that could potentially disrupt game balance. This success is attributed not only to the Switch’s capabilities but also to the ingenuity of the Zelda development team in creating a complex yet stable game system.
