Kia EV5 Facelift: New Design, Tech, and Potential 800V Upgrade

Kia’s midsize electric SUV, the EV5, is set for a refresh. While the vehicle has only recently begun rolling out in global markets like Europe, Korea, Canada, and Australia, Kia is already developing an updated version, promising enhancements to both design and technology.

First Look at the Updated EV5

The EV5 facelift was first spotted on a car carrier in Korea, revealing several key design updates. The headlights now feature Kia’s signature three-prong design, consistent with models like the K4, K5, and EV3. The front bumper also appears to adopt a wider, more aggressive aesthetic, echoing the design language of the EV5 WKNDR Concept showcased at the 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show in China.

Rear-finish changes include a complete bumper redesign and new wheel options, contributing to a more rugged, off-road-inspired appearance.

Revolutionized Interior with Pleos Infotainment System

A video from HealerTV provided the first glimpse of the EV5’s interior overhaul. The centerpiece of the update is the integration of Hyundai’s new Pleos infotainment system and operating system. The updated EV5 features the same setup as Hyundai vehicles equipped with Pleos, such as the China-made Elexio, though the instrument display is positioned slightly lower, sitting atop the dashboard. The display extends across the entire width of the dashboard, reaching the passenger seat.

Potential 800V System and Specifications

According to TheKoreanCarBlog, the updated model may incorporate an 800V electric system, a significant upgrade from the current 400V architecture. This change would substantially improve charging speeds, addressing a key area for improvement in the EV5.

The current EV5 measures 4,610 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. This makes it approximately 10 mm wider, 70 mm longer, and 30 mm taller than the Kia Sportage.

Space and Range

Kia highlights the EV5’s “best-in-class” rear passenger space, offering up to 1,041 mm of second-row legroom.

In Europe, the Kia EV5 is available with battery packs offering WLTP ranges of 400 km (248 miles) and 530 km (329 miles). In the UK, pricing starts at £39,295 ($53,000 USD).

Launch Timeline and Market Impact

Kia is expected to launch the updated EV5 in early 2027. The EV5 has been instrumental in Kia’s resurgence in the Chinese market and has become a top-selling EV in markets like Australia. This update aims to strengthen its position against competitors such as the Tesla Model Y and the BYD Sealion 7.
