Snowfall Expected in Willamette Valley, Travel Impacts Possible

The Willamette Valley, including Portland and Vancouver, is bracing for potential snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday, with a moderate chance of several inches accumulating and causing travel disruptions. While the exact location of the heaviest snowfall remains uncertain, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings and forecasts indicating a significant likelihood of winter weather.

Current Forecast and Confidence Levels

As of Tuesday afternoon, February 18, 2026, the NWS reports a 45 to 60% chance of one to two inches or more of snowfall occurring somewhere within the I-5 corridor. The Portland NWS Forecast Office notes “moderate confidence” for several inches of accumulating snow. There is a 40 to 65% chance of measurable snow falling along I-5 between Wednesday and noon on Thursday, with the central coast, central and northern Willamette Valley, the Columbia River Gorge, and the Portland and Vancouver areas most likely to be affected.

Uncertainty in Snow Band Location

Meteorologists are facing challenges in pinpointing the exact path of the low-pressure system responsible for the potential snowfall. The 7-Day Forecast highlights the models are not in agreement regarding the system’s trajectory. David Bishop, a meteorologist with the NWS in Portland, explained that the system could track anywhere “from the Olympic Peninsula down into California.” Three potential tracks are being considered, with Track 2, the most likely scenario, having a 40% probability.

Timing and Accumulation

Rain and snow showers are likely to begin Wednesday, potentially transitioning to all rain after 10 a.m. The snow level is expected to fluctuate between 400 and 1300 feet. Less than a half inch of new snow accumulation is possible on Wednesday. Wednesday night will bring rain and snow showers, mainly before midnight, with snow showers likely afterward. The snow level will drop to 600 feet. The Zone Area Forecast for West Central Willamette Valley indicates potential snow accumulation up to 1 inch overnight, with lows in the upper 20s.

Travel Impacts and Temperature Trends

The potential for snowfall raises concerns about travel impacts, particularly during the Wednesday evening commute. However, temperatures are expected to rise quickly, with a high of 45 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, suggesting that any snow accumulation will likely be short-lived. Current conditions at Portland International Airport (KPDX) as of 1:00 AM PST on February 18th are overcast with a temperature of 37°F (3°C) and 86% humidity.

Ongoing Updates

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the forecast becomes more certain. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential winter weather conditions. The US National Weather Service Portland Oregon Facebook page is a source for the latest information.
