Alex Ferreira’s Pursuit of Olympic Gold and His Journey Beyond the Slopes
As the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics approach, American freeskiier Alex Ferreira is laser-focused on achieving the one accolade that has eluded him: an Olympic gold medal. The 31-year-old, already a two-time Olympic medalist, enters the competition with a renewed dedication and a clear vision for success.
A Career Defined by Silver and Bronze
Ferreira’s Olympic journey began at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, where he secured a silver medal. He followed that success with a bronze medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Now, as he prepares for his third Olympic appearance, Ferreira is determined to complete his collection. “It’s time to complete the set,” he stated in an interview with TIME. “I’ve dedicated my entire life to the sport and to being the best of the best.”
Dominance on the Halfpipe Circuit
Beyond the Olympics, Ferreira has established himself as a dominant force in the halfpipe skiing world. In 2025, he won his third Crystal Globe, recognizing him as the best halfpipe skier globally, marking his second consecutive title. This consistent performance positions him as a strong contender for gold in Livigno, Italy, where the halfpipe freeski final is scheduled for February 20, 2026.
Mental Fortitude and Visualization
Ferreira emphasizes the importance of mental preparation. He has spent considerable time visualizing success, affirming his ability to win. “I’ve seen it a million times in my head,” he explained to TIME. “I’ve spoken it into reality a million times through affirmation. I, Alex Ferreira, will be the 2026 gold medalist.”
From Aspen Roots to Olympic Dreams
Born and raised in Aspen, Colorado, Ferreira discovered his passion for skiing at a young age. He began skiing at 3 years old and transitioned to competitive halfpipe skiing at age 10, inspired by the mountains and athletic backgrounds of his parents. His early experiences watching the X Games in Aspen fueled his ambition.
The “Hotdog Hans” Persona and Finding Humor
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ferreira created an alter ego, “Hotdog Hans,” a comedic character who playfully disrupts ski resorts. Inspired by similar characters like Kyrie Irving’s “Uncle Drew,” Hotdog Hans provided a much-needed dose of humor during a challenging time, garnering over 12 million views on some clips. A short film featuring Hotdog Hans was released on YouTube in January 2026, showcasing his comedic timing and creativity.
A Turning Point and Renewed Focus
Ferreira faced a potential setback in August 2023 when a bike accident left him unable to lift his arm. While awaiting MRI results, he feared the injury could jeopardize his season and career. This incident prompted a significant lifestyle change. He quit drinking, partying, and other distractions, dedicating himself entirely to his sport. “I had to learn the hard way. And honestly, it was a blessing in disguise,” he said.
Looking Ahead to Milano Cortina
With a renewed focus and unwavering determination, Alex Ferreira is poised to contend for the gold medal at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. He anticipates a celebratory moment should he achieve his goal, but remains committed to his craft and the pursuit of excellence. “People can expect to see greatness,” Ferreira confidently stated.
