Oxigen Data Center Doubles Capacity with Banco Sabadell Acquisition, Eyes Further Expansion
Oxigen Data Center has significantly expanded its infrastructure by acquiring a 10MW data center from Banco Sabadell, effectively doubling its operational capacity to 20MW. This strategic move positions the company for continued growth in the burgeoning European data center market, with plans to exceed 40MW of capacity by the end of 2026 through a €50 million investment.
Strategic Location and Infrastructure
The acquired facility is located in Sant Fruitós de Bages, Catalonia and complements Oxigen’s existing Tier III facility in Sant Cugat del Vallès. The Sant Cugat del Vallès site, relaunched in 2023, spans 6,000 square meters (64,580 sq ft), with 2,500 square meters (26,910 sq ft) dedicated to white space. Oxigen’s strategic location, just 16 km from Barcelona city center and 22 km from the Cable Landing Station, provides crucial connectivity and positions it as a key player in the region’s digital infrastructure.
Meeting Growing Demand for Secure, Sovereign Infrastructure
The expansion addresses the increasing demand for colocation and cloud services, particularly from highly regulated sectors such as industry, pharmaceuticals, finance, and healthcare. According to a LinkedIn post by Jordi M., the scale of Oxigen’s operations is now comparable to major industry platforms [1]. The company anticipates doubling its sales in 2026 and achieving a 100% cumulative increase over the next three years.
Sustainability and Technological Advancement
Oxigen Data Center is committed to sustainability, operating with 100% renewable energy and adhering to EU best practices. The facilities boast a high level of electrical safety, featuring dual electrical substations in low-risk flood zones [2]. The infrastructure is also designed to support emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum computing.
Banc Sabadell’s Cloud Transformation
The sale of the data center is part of Banc Sabadell’s strategy to outsource a portion of its cloud transformation, optimizing resilience and reducing costs. The bank previously operated a data center in Sant Cugat del Vallès but has since migrated to a facility in Madrid [3]. In 2024, Banc Sabadell also sold an office and data center property in Alcobendas, Madrid, to an unnamed data center operator [3].
Future Expansion and Technological Sovereignty
Oxigen Data Center is actively evaluating further acquisitions to strengthen technological sovereignty in the region. The company’s expansion strategy aims to meet the growing demand for proximity and security in critical infrastructure, leveraging its location near the airport and Mediterranean submarine cables [4].
