Shotokan Karate Wesel: Gina van Loock Achieves First Dan Black Belt

While many celebrated Carnival on Saturday, a delegation from Shotokan Karate Wesel eV traveled to Osnabrück for a significant event in the sports hall of the OTB (Osnabrück Turnerbund von 1876 eV). Club member Gina van Loock undertook the challenging examination for 1st Dan (black belt), facing the critical assessment of National Coach Thomas Schulze (7th Dan).

Rigorous Training and Examination

The day began with two demanding training sessions, placing the examinees, particularly van Loock, under intense observation. The focus was on the precise execution of techniques, emphasizing a firm stance as the foundation and the hips as the source of power for both blocks and counterattacks. The training progressed from slow, controlled movements to faster, more powerful applications through repetition. Combat training incorporated “Zanchin,” the continuous vigilance essential throughout a fight or training session.

Sensei Schulze stressed the importance of maintaining correct technique even during combat, warning against half-hearted or uncontrolled movements that would lack effectiveness.

Confidence and Success

Drawing on the principles honed in her dojo training, Gina van Loock approached the exam with confidence. Head Coach and First Chairman Michael Jarchau (6th Dan) arrived from Bottrop, having recently completed a course with Andreas Klein (6th Dan) focusing on athletics, gymnastics, and muscle chain training – concepts demonstrated in the Kata Heian Nidan. Jarchau’s presence underscored the club’s commitment to supporting its members through Dan examinations.

On Saturday, Gina van Loock successfully earned her longed-for 1st Dan certificate, marking the culmination of her dedication and skill.

Growing Ranks of Female Black Belts

The ranks of female black belts within Shotokan Karate Wesel eV continue to grow. The club expressed pride in van Loock’s achievement and looks forward to continued training and success.
