San Antonio’s Woodlawn Lake Park to Receive $2 Million for New Bike Path

San Antonio’s Woodlawn Lake Park is set to receive $2 million from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to fund the design and construction of a two-way bike path around the lake. The project aims to provide a safe space for cyclists and address a need voiced by residents for over two decades.

Funding and Legislative Background

The City of San Antonio was awarded the grant on Thursday, February 19, 2026, as part of TPWD’s local parks grant program. The funds originated from approximately $60 million allocated to TPWD for local parks through House Bill 500 during the last legislative session Texas Public Radio.

Addressing a Long-Standing Need

Currently, bike riding is prohibited on the main walking trails around Woodlawn Lake due to safety concerns. The desire for a dedicated bike path has been a recurring theme in city planning, appearing as early as the 2002 Near Northwest Community Plan and the San Antonio Bike Plan in 2011 Texas Public Radio. A proposal to gather public input on the bike path’s design was released in November 2024.

Community Impact and Park Significance

Woodlawn Lake Park is a heavily utilized recreational area in San Antonio, hosting popular events such as the city’s annual 4th of July fireworks show and a Día de los Muertos fireworks display organized by Planet K Texas Public Radio. District 7 City Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito emphasized the importance of the project, stating that the bike path will provide a safe space for families to enjoy the park Texas Public Radio.
