Hamilton County Jail’s Medication-Assisted Treatment Program Sees First Graduates
Hamilton County, Tenn. – Seven inmates at the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center have successfully completed the new Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program, launched in December. This initiative aims to expand treatment options for individuals struggling with opioid and alcohol use disorders, addressing a critical need within the local criminal justice system.
What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
The MAT program combines FDA-approved medications with comprehensive behavioral counseling. This approach is designed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, ultimately working to lower recidivism rates. Research consistently demonstrates that MAT programs can significantly reduce drug use and the risk of overdose events while simultaneously promoting sustained recovery .
Collaborative Effort Behind the Program
The program’s development was a collaborative effort spanning over two years, involving the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and key partners. These include Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp, Quality Correctional Health Care, the Hamilton County District Attorney’s Office, Hamilton County’s Economic & Community Development Office, and the McNabb Center .
Program Funding and Administration
The MAT program is funded by a $1.2 million Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP) grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) . Quality Correctional Health Care and the McNabb Center administer the program, providing both medical care and therapeutic support. Crucially, the program facilitates access to county-based care for individuals upon their release, ensuring continuity of treatment.
