Ebony Flyer, Triple South African G1 Winner, Dies at 18

Ebony Flyer, a celebrated racehorse who achieved triple Grade 1 victories in South Africa, was euthanized on February 21, 2026, at Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket, England. She was 18 years old. The decision followed complications arising from a difficult foaling on February 4th, according to BloodHorse.

Foaling Complications and Aftermath

Ebony Flyer delivered a Bradsell filly, who is reportedly doing well and has been returned to the farm and placed with a nurse mare, as reported by Bit of a Yarn. The mare was hospitalized at Rossdales Equine Hospital following the delivery.

A Champion’s Pedigree and Early Success

Bred in the Western Cape by W. J. Engelbrecht Jr., Ebony Flyer’s lineage caught the eye of Team Valor International (TVI) CEO Barry Irwin after her three-year-old half-sister, Captain’s Lover, showed promise in the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas. Irwin subsequently purchased both Captain’s Lover and Ebony Flyer, along with their dam, Sunshine Lover. This proved to be a successful investment, as both half-sisters went on to win the Cape Fillies Guineas, a rare feat for a dam and her offspring, as noted by SAHRacing.

Racing Career Highlights

Ebony Flyer demonstrated both speed and stamina, winning over distances from 1000 meters to 1600 meters. Her career included victories in the Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas, the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint, and the Grade 1 Majorca. She won eight of her 13 career starts, with six of those wins coming in stakes races, and placed in three others, according to BloodHorse.

Overcoming Adversity

Despite her talent, Ebony Flyer faced challenges during her racing career, developing breathing issues that required three surgeries. However, she consistently returned to the track and continued to compete at a high level. Irwin remarked, as reported by BloodHorse, that Ebony Flyer was comparable to champion Ipi Tombe, and speculated on how much more she could have achieved without the respiratory problems.

Legacy as a Producer

Beyond her racing accomplishments, Ebony Flyer proved to be a successful broodmare, producing seven winners from nine runners, including Grade 3-placed Cot Campbell and Listed-placed Black Silver, MSN reports.

“We have raced champion females around the globe, including in England and Ireland, but the only other filly we had in her league was Ipi Tombe,” Irwin said, as quoted by BloodHorse.
