Wasatch Girls, Lone Peak Boys Crowned 6A Swimming Champions
PROVO, Utah – A pair of title droughts ended Saturday at BYU’s pool as the Wasatch girls team secured their first 6A state championship since 2019, while the Lone Peak boys team captured their first state title since a four-peat from 2017-2020. The 6A state swim meet saw seven new state records fall – three in relays and four individual events.
Wasatch Girls Dominate
The Wasatch girls team demonstrated dominance throughout the meet, winning all three relays and six of the eight individual events. Their performance culminated in a team score of 311 points, surpassing Skyridge (257 points) and defending state champion Lone Peak (251.5 points).
“It’s really been a culmination. We’ve had a great group of girls, exceptionally hardworking. They swim all different races, which has been nice for me – we have somebody in every race, but just to win nine out of 11 races today, that was special,” said Wasatch coach Shawn Marsing according to Yahoo Sports.
Senior Ana Diedrichs led the Wasps, winning the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Kasenya Keller also contributed with wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, while Paige Hicken won the 100-yard breaststroke and Reece Andrews took the 100-yard fly. Diedrichs was named the 6A swimmer of the meet for accumulating the most NISCA points.
Diedrichs set a new 6A record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.73 seconds. Andrews also established a new 6A record in the 100-yard fly, finishing in 56.69 seconds.
Lone Peak Boys Secure Narrow Victory
The Lone Peak boys team faced a tighter competition, ultimately clinching the championship with a narrow win over Mountain Ridge. Lone Peak finished with 315 points, while Mountain Ridge followed closely with 302, and American Fork secured third place with 247 points.
The Knights’ victory was sealed by Xander Berg in the final relay of the meet, setting a new 6A record in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.19) alongside teammates Jason Dumas, Asher Topham, and Beck Johnson.
“That pressure is also a privilege. That pressure pushes you to work harder and to know that is a gift that you’ve been given to show off your abilities and to really compete and I think you do get those nervous feelings, but that’s just because you know you have to perform,” Berg said as reported by Yahoo Sports.
Berg also won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, completing a remarkable performance after finishing third in both races the previous year.
Brighton Shines with Records
Brighton senior Luan Barnard also had a standout performance, winning the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. He was also part of the Brighton team that set a new 6A record in the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.98). Barnard’s time in the 100-yard backstroke (47.72) was a new 6A state record.
