Villages in Uproar as Asylum Center Plans Divide Dutch Community

Nieuw-Lekkerland, Netherlands – A quiet polder community in the Molenlanden municipality is facing significant unrest as plans for a new asylum seeker center spark fierce debate and opposition from residents. The proposed center, slated for the gemeentewerf (municipal depot) on Koggeplantsoen in Nieuw-Lekkerland, is one of four locations under consideration by the municipality to house a total of 251 asylum seekers.

Concerns from Residents

Residents of Koggeplantsoen, a neighborhood primarily populated by elderly and vulnerable individuals, have voiced strong concerns about the potential impact of the center. According to Het Kontakt, many residents feel the municipality failed to adequately inform them about the plans, receiving only a brief letter without prior personal consultation. A common sentiment expressed is why a vulnerable population would be placed near another group also in a vulnerable situation.

“The gros of us is (hoog)bejaard or has another vulnerability. Why must there now be so many people living in our backyard?” a resident questioned, as reported by Het Kontakt.

Municipal Response and Proposed Locations

The Molenlanden municipality initiated a search for suitable locations in the summer of 2025, engaging with residents and community organizations to gather input. Thirty locations were initially submitted and evaluated against criteria established by the municipal council. In addition to the Koggeplantsoen site, other locations being considered include a plot on the Parallelweg in Arkel and parcels on the Melkweg and Wervenkampweg in Bleskensgraaf. The municipality aims to establish a maximum of one reception location per village.

According to the municipality’s website, a decision on which locations will undergo further investigation is expected on February 24, 2026, following a review by the municipal council on February 3, 2026.

Protests and Political Reactions

The proposed plans have triggered significant protest activity. On February 20, 2026, a car parade traveled from Nieuw-Lekkerland to a council meeting to demonstrate opposition to the asylum centers. A petition has also been launched, garnering substantial support from concerned citizens.

The ChristenUnie party has criticized the municipality’s communication strategy, stating that it was “far below standard.” They argue that the lack of personal engagement with residents, particularly those who are vulnerable, was a significant oversight.

Ongoing Dialogue

Burgemeester Theo Segers acknowledged the concerns of residents, stating, “We understand that this news may raise questions. In this phase, we do not yet have answers to everything. I hope that, as in the past months, we will continue to talk to each other and residents will continue to share their ideas and involvement.” The municipality has committed to maintaining open communication with residents throughout the process.
