Miss Belgium Organization Faces Scrutiny Amidst Misconduct Allegations

The Miss Belgium organization is currently grappling with a wave of accusations concerning exploitative practices and a potentially toxic work environment. These allegations surfaced prominently following the Miss Belgium 2026 final on Saturday, prompting organizer Darline Devos to publicly address the claims.

Allegations of Exploitation and Pressure

The current controversy began last summer when former Miss Belgium titleholders Kenza Ameloot and Cilou Annys came forward with their experiences. Ameloot described a year characterized by intense work pressure, limited financial compensation, and a restrictive contract that significantly impacted her personal life. She similarly highlighted the financial burden placed on the candidates themselves.

Annys corroborated these accounts, confirming similar hardships during her reign in 2010. Celine Van Ouytsel, Miss Belgium from a previous year, further added to the concerns. Speaking on VRT 1’s “Het Huis,” Van Ouytsel stated her year as Miss Belgium was entirely consumed by the organization, all for a monthly salary of 1,000 euros, which she termed a “starvation wage.” While she doesn’t regret her participation, she wouldn’t recommend the experience to others.

Darline Devos Responds

Darline Devos, the National Director of Miss Belgium, responded to the criticisms in a recent appearance on “De Afspraak,” asserting her belief that she provides adequate care for the contestants. Devos, who has been at the helm of the organization for 15 years, taking over from Cécile Muller in 2005, maintains a philosophy centered on fostering both inner and outer beauty, drawing inspiration from practices like yoga and shiatsu. Her Instagram profile identifies her as the National Director of Miss Belgium and notes her Master’s degree in pharmacy.

Further Allegations and Investigation

Specific allegations include an incident recounted by Ameloot, where a revealing photograph of her, taken backstage during a fashion show, was posted on social media without her consent.

Adding to the scrutiny, a complaint of sexual misconduct has been filed against Guy D’hooghe, the husband of Darline Devos and a co-organiser of the Miss Belgium contest, by a candidate from the 2025 edition. A prosecutor is currently investigating the claims.
